Yay Friday!!! What are you guys up to this weekend? I’m getting a lash “lift and tint” tomorrow. I’ve never had anything like that done before (or eyelash extensions) so I’m excited to see what it’s like. I’ll let you guys know how it goes! Other than that, I’m just relaxing and getting some work done.
Today, I wanted to share my first set of photos from Sydney, Australia. As a recap, we headed over there a few weeks ago for our friends’ wedding part 2. The wedding took place in Brisbane, and then a bunch of us flew to Hamilton Island (near the Great Barrier Reef) to enjoy the beach life for a few days. After that, we headed our separate ways. Some went home, some kept exploring other parts of Australia, and the newly married couple headed to Thailand for their honeymoon. Chris and I talked about going to New Zealand, but it would have been another 8 hours with connecting flights, plus extra vacation days so we’d have time to explore. So instead, we went to Sydney, for 3 nights. Two of our friends also went!
On day 1, we made it in around almost 6pm, so we just checked into our hotel, showered, and headed to dinner. We went to a cash only restaurant, not realizing it was cash only, or that we didn’t have much any Australian money. We didn’t know until we got our bill – so I walked a block over to the nearest ATM, only to have it eat my card and immediately shut down.
However, it looked it it was going to reboot. At this point, I had been gone for about 15 minutes or more, so I realized that Chris must be getting worried (he didn’t have cell service). I ran back to the restaurant where he was sitting there looking panicked, and told him what happened. Chris had to stay at the restaurant since we hadn’t paid, but went back to the ATM to see if it would maybe spit my card back out after it finished rebooting. No such luck.
I was nervous about leaving the ATM without notifying my bank. I called them so they could lock the card (they kept transferring me and it took over 20 minutes). All of a sudden Chris showed up – he had come to find me, and left his phone as collateral at the restaurant. We weren’t really sure what to do – were we going to be asked to wash dishes?? We went back to the restaurant together and explained what had happened. Luckily the restaurant was really nice about it and let us pay them in US dollars. Whew! That was an eventful first night. Lesson learned: carry cash (for the right country) and more than one ATM card.
The next day, we finally got to do some exploring. We walked by the Sydney Opera House, as well through the Royal Botanic Gardens. I wore this colorful floral print midi dress (here), which is a great pick for being out and about. With shorter sun dresses, there’s always a risk of a gust of wind coming at an inopportune time. I’ve often had to walk around Chicago with my hands holding my skirt down when it’d suddenly get windy. On the other hand, maxi dresses may not be the best choice when you’re walking around all day. I feel like mine tend to get dirty at the hem, and sometimes, they constrict my walking.
Enter the midi dress! This one is so bright and colorful (and the print hides dirt and stains from when you’re on the go), and the straps are adjustable. Another benefit of midi dresses is that despite your height, it’ll look good on you, and you probably won’t need alterations. (Notice it might look longer on me since I’m 5’4″).

Have a great weekend! Let me know if you have any Australia related questions!
