It’s not a secret that I don’t like working out (or dislike it more than the average person). This is due to a few reasons, like the fact that I get exercise-induced rhinitis (my nose starts running whenever my heart rate goes up…gross) but also because for years, I wore the wrong clothes to exercise in.
(Sports bra, shoes, yoga mat, leggings are currently out of stock, but are sometimes restocked, here)
A few years ago, my “work out gear” consisted of cotton tank tops from Forever 21 and Soffe shorts. That’s what I wore the first time I went to a Bikram yoga class (heated to 105 degrees). Excessive sweat and cotton? Terrible idea.
When I’m busy with my full-time job, part-time graduate school, the blog, and life in general, exercise is usually the first thing that gets skipped on my to-do list.
How I Trick Myself Into Exercising
The only things I’ve found to be effective in making myself go are 1) wearing cute workout clothes and 2) putting on said clothes hours before I plan on working out! Seriously, #1 and 2 work! Have you ever not felt like doing something because you didn’t think you were dressed cute? The other day, I was shopping on my lunch break and ran into someone I hadn’t seen for a while. She immediately exclaimed “Omg, I look like such a mess today!” and snuck away instead of hanging around to chat (At least I think that’s the reason she ran away! Haha).
My point is, not looking cute should be the least of your worries when working out, and you definitely don’t want to convince yourself not to go because you’re in an old, raggedy t-shirt and feeling in a rut. If I put on a sports bra and yoga pants to watch TV or do homework, I’m WAY more likely to end up heading to yoga, running on the treadmill, or doing this video a couple hours later (even if I’m at home and no one will see me!) You know how they say to dress for success or dress for the job you want? I say, dress like you’re going to exercise, and you might end up doing it.
